Inside Machinist
1) Sets up and operates conventional, special-purpose, and numerical control machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts, and fits and assembles machined parts into complete units, applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques: Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.

2) Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.

3) Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.

4) Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

5) Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.

6) Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications, using precision measuring instruments.

7) Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.

8) Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools, and power tools.

9) Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.

10) May install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.

11) May operate welding equipment to cut or weld parts.

12) May develop specifications from general description and draw sketch of part or product to be fabricated.

13) May confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

Welder

  • The Welder operates safety equipment and uses safe work habits while performing his job function.
  • The Welder welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • The Welder ignites torches or starts power supplies and strikes arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits.
  • The Welder detects faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notifies supervisors.
  • The Welder clamps, holds, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolts component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
  • The Welder operates manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, and flux-cored arc, plasma arc, and shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding.
  • The Welder monitors the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts of warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of materials.
  • The Welder examines work pieces for defects and measures work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • The Welder recognizes, set up, and operates hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
  • The Welder will lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.

Welder needs knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
Welder needs knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
The Welder knows that he must be able to use mathematics to solve problems pertaining to welding functions
The Welder needs to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
The Welder is responsible to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
The Welder needs to be able to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
The Welder performs physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

Firewatch
Basic Responsibilities and Duties of a Fire Watch
One of the effective ways to eliminate and control fire hazards is to have a fire watch. This is a requirement whenever welding and other operations posing fire hazards are done in the workplace. Here are the basic responsibilities of a fire watch:
  • Watch out for fire hazards in the workplace while work is performed by other employees.
  • Maintain the conditions and requirements stated on the Hot work permit. Keep area clean and free of debris. Clean up work space at the end of each shift.
  • Keep flammable materials 30ft from ignition sources.
  • In the event of fire, extinguish it immediately or turn a fire alarm on.
  • Call 911 or the emergency alarm number.
  • Stop operations if you find any hazardous condition.
Any condition in the workplace, whether usual or unexpected, determines your basic duties as a fire watch. Some of them are the following:
  • Make sure you and other employees are aware of the exact location of fire fighting equipment in the immediate area. Maintain constant means of communication with Hot Worker.
  • As much as possible, keep visual and voice contact with other employees.
  • Before and during each shift, inspect the entire work area and look for potential release of flammable vapors or liquids.
  • Be prepared to operate fire extinguishers, hydrants, fixed monitors, and hose carts anytime.
  • Never leave the job site while the work is being done. If you have to leave, stop the job and notify workers that you are “standing-by-for”.
  • When all operations are done, do not leave the worksite unless you’re sure that there are no hot sparks, burning embers and other fire hazards.
  • Return all fire fighting equipment to their original location.

Labor Worker
General Laborer Job Duties

Marine Insulator

This is journeyman level work in the fabrication of various types of insulating materials from fiberglass, foamglass, mineral fibers, synthetic rubber, and other products commonly used in the trade.

Work involves installing insulation on steam, hot and chill water piping, refrigeration lines, and air conditioning ducts. Work also involves the proper anchoring of insulation with spotwelded pins, tie wires, metal bands, screws, and other fasteners. Assignments are made in the form of written or oral instructions. Work is inspected for satisfactory compliance with instruction, although routine repairs are usually made independently without supervision or review.

Duties and Responsibilities

Fabricates insulating materials from fiberglass, foamglass, mineral fibers, synthetic rubber, and other products commonly used in the insulation installation trade.

Installs insulation on steam, hot water, chill water, refrigeration lines, piping and fittings, and air conditioning ducts.

Covers insulation on pipes with canvas and installs vapor barriers, waterproofing products, and metal protection sheets.

Anchors insulation with spotwelded pins, tie wires, metal bands, screws, and other fasteners.

Measures, computes, and determines the correct type insulation needed for jobs; provides orders for materials required.

Receives work orders and carries out insulation duties.

Marine Carpenter
Marine Carpenter will construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, metal studs, and drywall using carpenter’s hand tools and power tools making sure to conform to local building codes. Specific responsibilities:
    • Installing foundations, walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs using materials such as: wood, steel, metal, concrete, plastics, and composites of multiple materials
    • Fitting and installing window frames, doors, door frames, door hardware, interior and exterior trim using a carpenters level, plumb bob, and laser levels

Marine Electrician
Electrician Experience Responsibilities:
    • Read and interpret drawings and specifications to determine installation requirements
    • Electrical trade mathematics and formulas in order to calculate voltage, amperes and resistance requirements
    • Determine size and types of material, such as controls, switches, distribution panels, fuses, cable and conduit size, determining power source, etc.

Sheet Metal Mechanic

Ship Fitter

1) Lays out and fabricates metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and braces them in position within hull of ship for riveting or welding: Lays out position of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates and using scribe and hand tools.

2) Locates and marks reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines.

3) Positions parts in hull of ship, assisted by RIGGER.

4) Aligns parts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.

5) Marks location of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding or riveting.

6) Installs packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.

7) May prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts.

8) May tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.

9) May roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts, using shop machinery, such as plate rolls, presses, bending brakes, and joggle machines.

Pipe Fitter
Journeyman Pipefitters are assigned to rip out, repair, target, layout, fabricate, install and test marine piping systems on board ships in various stages of repair and modernization. Repair and replacement of ships’ piping systems such as Auxiliary Salt Water, Fire Main, Potable Water, Hydraulic, Compressed Air, Fuel Oil, Lube Oil, Engine Exhaust etc. are accomplished utilizing work item specifications, NAVSEA/Military standards and marine blueprints. Necessary fabrication abilities include the use of various shop equipment such as table saws, pipe threading machines, bending machines (power as well as hand operated), drill presses and brazing equipment. Additional tasks associated with this position are the strain free of pumps and miscellaneous ship equipment as well as blanking, pressure testing of tanks (structural boundary testing) and unblinking of the same. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Silver Braze certification is required, and testing will be conducted
